Evaluation 1 (Script)

Use -
On my front cover for my model i used a medium close up, only showing the models chest and above. this is so i could zoom up to the face of the model more to show emotion and express the feelings aswell. This idea i got from a famous magazine called RESPECT on the issue
 ( vhttp://s53.photobucket.com/user/spatemag/media/birdman-rapradar.jpg.html)
featuring Birdman. On this front cover Birdman is the main focus as he takes up the main portion of the page. This is also the same as mine, i wanted my model to be the main focus as it shows the reader everything they need to know before reading it such as: what type of genre it is, what age group the target audience is. I believe my model shows that as well as the RESPECT cover featuring Birdman. Ive applied this to my model by making him look dull with no emotion whilst not looking intimidating to create that hip hop genre feel.

On my contents page i used a long shot so the model is showing the outfit they are wearing. I did this because clothes are a big factor in picking your target audience. For instance in the Vibe magazine contents page featuring Kaye West as the model,
https://salehsidat69.files.wordpress.com/2012/05/vibe-contents-page2.jpg
he has his body free so his outfit is visible. This magazine in particular shows that it is looking for a more mature audience, i can see this by the outfit the model is wearing. So i took this and applied it to mine by making the model wear an outfit suitable to my target audience which is around 16-21.

On my double page spread i used an image which overlaps both pages without important a fake background behind a studio took picture. As both pages are full of the same picture it gives a more chatty look to the magazine whilst looking professional and creative but it makes the reader intrigued to look at it. This is also seen in the GAME NOVA magazine featuring Jay Z.
http://tomasthegooner.weebly.com/uploads/3/9/5/6/39566063/797231_orig.jpg?158
Jay Zs head overlaps onto two pages which gives a creative feel to the page rather than being basic. It really makes your magazine stand out from others.

Develop-
On my front cover I used a white model because I saw that the majority of the famous hip hop covers they have black stars on the front. So I wanted to add a more unique feel to my magazine. I also thought that if I make the model wear more casual clothes which this generation of teenagers usually wear then they will relate to it and maybe be attracted to buy it.

On my contents page I included an editors note at the top right of my cover including a signature. I also overlapped a shape with an image of a model posing as the editor. I also made the model wear lighter clothes so it seemed more of a friendly magazine compared to others so a wider audience can be targeted.

Finally on my double page spread, i made the model use an indirect pose with his hands holding his hood so it give a more hip hop effect. The look created a more intimidating feeling so you can attract the correct audience.

Challenge-

The colour scheme on my front cover has no extremely dark colours like the other hip hop covers do which mainly feature black. I tried to feature more dull colours whilst still adding a splash of primary colours to stand out from the audience.

On my contents page the layout i used was very specific because everything just about fit in in its own place. I divided the page into 2 so one side was for cover lines and the other for the model and editors note.

For my double page spread i used a natural city background at night with the street lights on creating a very creative look for the magazine. This background really makes my magazine stand out as it is very unique.

Feedback

I got the feedback from a Facebook post i posted on my personal profile which was available to family and friends. A mixture of ages and genders commented, some family members, some close friends it was a mixture of views which helped me. I only used my double page spread because that was the main piece i was unsure on which i needed other peoples views because i couldn't see what to change, overall i believe this was great help.

Research & Planning - Shot List

Research & Planning - Magazine Progress 24

Here you can see my front cover with most of the layers i used. as you can see on the text layers for the main cover line and titles/headings i used several blending options to retrieve the look i was going for.  I used bevel strongly to make sure it looked more hip hop style for my titles.

Research & Planning - Magazine Progress 23

I have included my final image and this is possibly the final piece of my contents page, i may come back to do a few touch ups.

Research & Planning - Magazine Progress 22

I have now included an image of the model.

Research & Planning - Magazine Progress 21

As you can see i have edited the size of the coverless and repositioned a few so it fits better around the model once i import the image. I might in the future edit the font i have used, i have already just lowered the size to 14 from 18

Research & Planning - Magazine Progress 19

Now i have included my sub headings to describe what each story is going to be about. I used a small thin blue font so it fits perfectly in the small amount of space given. It also stays with the house style matching the title.

Research & Planning - Magazine Progress 18

Here are the main coverlines for each story, i have used a bevelled font which is previously used on my other pieces. It is a grey so it stands out from the rest but doesn't clash. It fits perfectly with the surroundings.

Research & Planning - Magazine Progress 17

Here you can see the i have used white/grey numbers for the page numbers. This is so it stands out from the background but stays with the same house style.

Research & Planning - Magazine Progress 16

I decided to use a dark grey as my background so the letters stood out to the reader (the colour i used for the letters). Then i used blue for my title so i was sticking with the house style.

Research & Planning - Magazine Progress 15

After i had finished my double page spread, i realised my page was too small so i had to make the page bigger and spread everything out.

Research & Planning - Magazine Progress 14

This is the final stage hopefully before i insert my picture. I have included a page number and website in the bottom corner to create that magazine feel.

Research & Planning - Magazine Progress 13

Here i have included a quote just above the space i have left for the image i still need to get. I have used purple because i have used purple in my other documents so it setting a house style/theme. I have changed the positioning of the drop capital swell so it is more aligned and gives a more professional look.

Research & Planning - Magazine Progress 12

Here you can see i have used a drop capital at the beginning of my story about Sef. I have then used a title which appeals to the reader and introduces the documentary.

Research & Planning - Magazine Progress 11

To start off with on my double page spread, i created the gutter margins then typed up the main story of the magazine. I got a lot of my ideas/inspiration from a film called 'straight outta compton' but didn't copy it, i just got some ideas from it, inspiration from the character Dr Dre in the film.

Research & Planning - Magazine Progress 10

Here is the new image i have got. I have chosen a new image so i am able to get a better double page spread shot. I am more flexible for more shots with this new model.

Friday, 26 February 2016

Research & Planning - Magazine Progress 9

Here you can see i have changed the colour scheme on my front cover. I changed the subheadings to blue from red and and orange. I then changed the background to a darker grey so my new image stood out more and there was no clash.

Research & Planning - Weather

The weather today isn't suitable it is too windy and raining to get the correct shot. I will just take all of my indoor shots today for example my front cover shot and I can take my outdoor pictures next Friday when the weather is better.

Research & Planning - Magazine Progress 8

I included a red line and red sub heading to make the magazine stand out more. The main focus of changing the colour was to make SEF stand out so i made the quote about SEF larger and embossed with a red colour overlay.

Monday, 8 February 2016

Research & Planning - Magazine Progress 7

I reevaluated my design and thought about what is going to be my main focus and who is. I need SEF to be my main focus because he is the main focus of the magazine; the double page spread is all about him. So i changed the previous main cover line to the same as the others and began to change the colours and designs.

Research & Planning - Magazine Progress 6

I have included the main cover line now but have made it stand out from the rest because it is the main thing which will attract the audience. I used AtlanticCruise font in size 24pt but i stretched the text so it fit perfectly. I used some typography editing sliders so it stuck to the hip hop theme and didn't overlap the image. I used the same font for the cover line but stretched the text. I used red text so it stood out but the only problem is that it looks random and the main cover line isn't about the main image model (SEF).

Half Term Plan

My plan for the half term in February is too 1st of all focus on my front cover, as i am a first time customer to photoshop on my personal PC. I can get a free month trial so i am able to use photoshop at home. This means i can update and blog my progress and hopefully complete it over the half term. As i am off, i will have a lot of spare time so my model who is my sisters boyfriend. I can be available all the time so i can arrange a date in that week to go out at night that suits him and take the pictures for my front cover/double page spread.
The second post i need to complete is the weather assessment for the shoot i will be doing, this is a post which shows if it is possible to get my pictures.
The third and final post is my production schedule for when i get back to college, when i will be shooting and making posts.

Research & Planning - Magazine Progress 5

I have got some sentences just below each cover line going more in depth about what the article will be about. I have used AtlanticCruise font 24pt size. I have used a maroon colour so it matches the theme i am going for. I am trying to not use any wild colours only for the main stories which need to stand out.

Tuesday, 2 February 2016

Research & Planning - Magazine Progress 4 2/2

Here i have thought of 4 cover lines to use about artists within the hip hop genre. I am using BebasNeue font in size 41pt. It has 2 blending options, one is colour overlay which is white and a drop shadow is used. I have used white so i am staying with the same house style and also staying with the hip-hop theme.

Research & Planning - Magazine Progress 4 1/2

I have added some extra features in this stage, including a line to partition the publication line and title from the cover lines which i will be soon adding. I have also added a barcode it the bottom right with the price and date it was published.

Research & Planning - Magazine Progress 3

I got a medium close up as the main picture for my front cover, i asked my model to give a serious look at an angle with direct address. I chose him as my model because he has a hip hop clothing style with a hoodie under a bomber jacket. He also has facial hair with rough flat hair which add to the style Im going for. To make it so it was only him and no background, i used the magic wand tool and selected then deleted the background. It was easy because I took the picture in front of a plain white screen.

Research & Planning - Magazine Progress 2

My publication line I chose because i didn't see it on any popular magazines on the internet so it is unique and it is very effective to the audience.

Tuesday, 26 January 2016

Research & Planning - Magazine Progress 1

To start off with I created a Photoshop document with a grey background. I picked this shade of grey because it links in with my my picture of my model. I used Lemon/Milk Regular Font in size 102pt.
I use Gulf as my title because it is unique and effective with my style.

Research & Planning - Camera Shots

These are the unedited pictures i took for my double page spread and cover. They were took with a DSLR camera in an outside environment with non and natural lighting, a mixture of both.
